Maximiliano Jara egresado de Ingenier\u00eda Civil de Materiales de la Universidad de Concepci\u00f3n<\/strong>, desde 2017 vive en Inglaterra y hoy se encuentra terminando un doctorado en Ingenier\u00eda Qu\u00edmica en University College London (UCL, UK)<\/strong>. Su trayectoria acad\u00e9mica en postgrados comenz\u00f3 en 2014 cuando se fu\u00e9 a Suiza para hacer un Master en Ciencia e Ingenier\u00eda de Materiales en \u00c9cole Polytechnique F\u00e9d\u00e9rale de Lausanne (EPFL, Suiza). Un a\u00f1o y medio despu\u00e9s recibi\u00f3 la oferta de beca para hacer un doctorado en UCL, la cual acept\u00f3 y se encuentra desarrollando en la actualidad.\u00a0<\/h4>\n

Su proyecto de investigaci\u00f3n de doctorado es en biosensores mesoporosos. En palabras simples explica, \u201cestoy haciendo una m\u00e1quina que combina nanomateriales y biomol\u00e9culas (anticuerpos, ssDNA) para detectar agentes pat\u00f3genos. Espec\u00edficamente, para detectar una prote\u00edna que est\u00e1 relacionada al c\u00e1ncer de mama y la bacteria E. Choli que es com\u00fan en agua contaminada\u00bb<\/strong>.<\/h4>\n

\u00bfPor qu\u00e9 viajar al extranjero?<\/strong><\/h3>\n

\u201cLa verdad es que quer\u00eda aprender m\u00e1s en el \u00e1rea de ingenier\u00eda de materiales y mejorar mi ingl\u00e9s. Para argumentar esto\u00a0me gustar\u00eda empezar diciendo que disfrut\u00e9 haciendo la tesis de pregrado. Me acuerdo la satisfacci\u00f3n que sent\u00ed al ver funcionar por primera vez una m\u00e1quina para hacer\u00a0<\/strong>thin films<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0que fabriqu\u00e9. O como me alegraba la semana ir a la sala de microscop\u00eda y ver que el protocolo de s\u00edntesis de nanopart\u00edculas hab\u00eda funcionado. Esas peque\u00f1as cosas me alimentaban un poco la pasi\u00f3n por hacer y descubrir<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Maximiliano trabaj\u00f3 dos a\u00f1os en la industria chilena luego de egresar de la Facultad de Ingenier\u00eda UdeC,\u00a0\u201cese tiempo me sirvi\u00f3 para confirmar mi pasi\u00f3n por la ingenier\u00eda aplicada y que todav\u00eda sent\u00eda esa curiosidad por aprender. \u00bfCu\u00e1les han sido las ventajas que has podido vivenciar en tu situaci\u00f3n actual, lo m\u00e1s enriquecedor?\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Algunas de las ventajas es aprender a dejar sesgos de lado y disfrutar de lo que la diversidad cultural le entrega. Respecto a su ambiente laboral y de estudio agrega que, \u201che tenido la posibilidad de trabajar y estudiar con profesionales que son l\u00edderes en su \u00e1rea. Por ejemplo, uno de mis profesores del Master fue un astronauta que trabaj\u00f3 en el telescopio espacial Hubble.\u00a0 En mi doctorado he podido ir a charlas de profesores que son premio Nobel\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jara tambi\u00e9n menciona, \u201cdebido a que estoy en la academia, siento que una ventaja importante es que he tenido acceso a equipamiento y a t\u00e9cnicas para hacer investigaci\u00f3n, que son lo mejor en el \u00e1rea que trabajo<\/strong>.\u00a0Adem\u00e1s, he colaborado con equipos<\/strong>\u00a0en China, Australia, Francia, Italia, USA, Suiza, etc. a los que puedo contactar en caso de necesitar ayuda t\u00e9cnica. Tener acceso a esas herramientas y a ese conocimiento es una de las mayores ventajas que he tenido\u201d.<\/p>\n

Desde mi punto de vista creo que va por buen camino, pero le falta apoyo de varios stakeholders para lograr ser referentes mundiales.<\/p>\n

Trabajando en Chile vi que hay mucha capacidad intelectual. Me refiero a que hay ingenieros brillantes, que con las adecuadas oportunidades y recursos econ\u00f3micos ser\u00edan capaces de crear lo imposible. Sin embargo, creo que la industria chilena todav\u00eda es muy conservadora y no se atreve a innovar lo suficiente.<\/strong>\u00a0Es cosa de ver cu\u00e1ntas grandes empresas tienen \u00e1reas de investigaci\u00f3n y desarrollo, muy pocas.<\/p>\n

Tampoco desarrollan proyectos en conjunto con universidades, ni financian investigaciones<\/strong>\u00a0para solucionar sus problemas.\u00a0La mayor\u00eda prefiere importar soluciones o ingenier\u00eda extranjera,<\/strong>\u00a0a desarrollarla en Chile:\u00a0es que es m\u00e1s c\u00f3modo y menos riesgoso<\/strong>\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finalmente, me gustar\u00eda terminar diciendo que el nivel de exigencia en ingenier\u00eda de la UdeC es comparable, o a veces mayor, a las universidades europeas.<\/strong> Entonces el problema no est\u00e1 en la capacidad de los profesionales que tenemos en Chile para hacer cosas. Sino que en la cultura empresarial y en el poco incentivo a los j\u00f3venes para desarrollar la ingenier\u00eda chilena de forma competitiva\u00bb.<\/p>\n

\u00abEn Inglaterra muchas empresas privadas financian proyectos que no son m\u00e1s que soluciones a sus propios problemas.<\/strong>\u00a0Adem\u00e1s, le dan la oportunidad a los PhD de seguir trabajando para ellos, es un win-win.<\/p>\n

En suiza, en la Universidad que hice el master hab\u00eda un parque<\/strong>\u00a0similar a el Pacyt ,\u00a0el EPFL innovation park.<\/strong>\u00a0Este parque le da el espacio necesario, asesor\u00eda y oportunidades a los j\u00f3venes que tienen ideas con potencial de ser industrializadas. Es la cuna de las start-up de la EPFL.\u00a0A modo de ejemplo, actualmente es la casa de 150 start-ups y 26 grandes empresas que trabajan en conjunto con la Universidad. As\u00ed que no es sorpresa que Suiza, un pa\u00eds con 8.5 millones de habitantes, lidere los rankings de innovaci\u00f3n mundial. La UdeC va por buen camino\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p>\n
