El pasado viernes 22 de marzo se realiz\u00f3 la clase magistral de la carrera de Ingenier\u00eda Civil Qu\u00edmica de nuestra Facultad, instancia protagonizada por el maestro de la ingenier\u00eda qu\u00edmica en los \u00faltimos 20 a\u00f1os, el Doctor H. Scott Fogler de la Universidad de Michigan.<\/strong><\/p>\n En un auditorio salvador G\u00e1lvez repleto y con un segundo auditorio visualizando la transmisi\u00f3n v\u00eda streaming a trav\u00e9s de las redes sociales de la FI, fue c\u00f3mo se llev\u00f3 a cabo la charla magistral de ingenier\u00eda qu\u00edmica, en el marco de la celebraci\u00f3n de sus 100 a\u00f1os, con la visita del Profesor norteamericano Scott Fogler, autor de los libros con los que todos los ingenieros qu\u00edmicos de la FI UdeC se han formado desde hace ya varias generaciones.<\/p>\n Para Teresita Marzialetti, docente del Departamento de Ingenier\u00eda Qu\u00edmica y quien preside el Comit\u00e9 organizador de las actividades centenario del DIQ, \u00abla visita del profesor Fogler fue muy significativa para nosotros como ingenieros qu\u00edmicos. Por un lado, porque el Dr. Fogler es mundialmente conocido y reconocido por su aporte a la docencia en temas relacionados con procesos y reacciones qu\u00edmicas, lenguajes de programaci\u00f3n y simulaci\u00f3n en ingenier\u00eda qu\u00edmica. Asimismo, es autor de unos de los libros m\u00e1s usados en nuestra carrera: \u201cElements of chemical reaction engineering\u201d. Y por otro lado, su conferencia fue el punto central del acto de inauguraci\u00f3n de la Celebraci\u00f3n del Centenario de nuestra carrera, Ingenier\u00eda Qu\u00edmica, y de la Facultad de Ingenier\u00eda\u00bb.<\/p>\n Cabe destacar que el doctor Fogler fue presidente del Instituto Americano de Ingenieros Qu\u00edmicos (AIChE) en 2009 y recibi\u00f3 un Doctor Honoris Causa de la Universitat Rovira i Virgili en Espa\u00f1a en 2016. Es autor de 12 libros, los cuales se estima son usados por alrededor del 75% de todos los programas de ingenier\u00eda qu\u00edmica en Estados Unidos y tienen una posici\u00f3n dominante en el mercado mundial. El profesor Fogler ha recibido numerosos premios y distinciones tanto por su destacada contribuci\u00f3n a la docencia en el \u00e1rea, as\u00ed como por sus investigaciones aplicadas principalmente a la industria petrolera. A su vez, ha participado como orador en numerosas charlas magistrales alrededor del mundo, compartiendo su experiencia y pasi\u00f3n por la ense\u00f1anza con las nuevas generaciones de ingenieros qu\u00edmicos.<\/p>\n En su visita, tuvimos la oportunidad de conversar con \u00e9l y entrevistarlo.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n We know about your contribution to the formation of students around the world\u2026 How do you feel about it? To be a good professor?<\/strong><\/p>\n I don’t know if I’m a good professor, but it feels good to interact with students, I love students. In my goal is to make learning fun for students, not like \u201cI have to do that\u201d. I want to make it fun, and that\u00b4s I think I have been successful in.<\/em><\/p>\n What do you think, are the challenges of future generations in your area?<\/strong><\/p>\n In my area\u2026 it\u00b4s a tough question\u2026 I mean, if I can see the future, I can invest\u2026 but what they have to do it is may sure they learn the fundamentals, the applications will always change, but the fundamentals will remain the same. So they have to learn the basics, and then look, and a have vision, of how they can apply them. And that’s the matter of using their creativity, and it is something I think we need, all around the world, we need to focus on, and that is developing the student’s creativity and their ways to do that, that’s where the focus should be.<\/em><\/p>\n And now are you working in a new edition of your book\u2026? Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n Because there’s a small period of shifts with Wolfram. Wolfram, it\u00b4s new software, and it’s allowed to students to explore things rapidly. The old homework problems would say, alright, what size? how big must your reactor be to achieve 50% conversion, and they do a calculation. Now, we have the reactor simulated on Wolfram, and we ask them to do experiments: change the temperature, so they move the slider; change this, that, so they move all this and see everything change right before their eyes, and then, we ask them to write a set of conclusion on their experiments; see every time they move these sliders, they doing experiments. And now they can do an experiment from their desks, they can do 25, 50 experiments and then describe what they find, it’s a different way of thinking.<\/em><\/p>\n Well, the other thing I have been working on, that I given to the think its safety, and now I have a website where the teaches safety in every single core of chemical engineering course, so you have the first course, they have a safety much, they view a video of explosion, and then they have to say, what could they have done to prevent the explosion? That\u00b4s the first thing.
